January – Establish 5 Essential Habits

Happy New Year 2022!

1: January 5 is National Keto Day, established in 2019 by The Vitamin Shoppe “to educate and bring awareness to the ketogenic diet and further highlight the many health benefits a keto lifestyle offers.” If you already “eat keto,” this article will affirm and support you. If you do not, this short article will increase your understanding of what it means.

2: Keep reading to learn more about diabetes, whether you are type 1 or type 2 or just at risk for diabetes, and whether you are dietary vegan, lacto-ovo vegetarian, or “Adventist non-vegetarian” (eating only “clean” meat/fish). Of course, you should consider getting the Kindle or paperback format of our classic book, Adventist Vegetarian Diabetics! Peruse our Book Lists again and select a book (or books) that you haven’t read yet. We strongly recommend (especially for type 1 diabetics) Dr. Richard K. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars and (for all diabetics) Dr. Jason Fung’s The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally

3: If you are comfortable with using your glucometer (blood glucose meter), kudos to you! If not, please focus this month on Mastering Use of Your Glucometer. This is the one most essential skill to master because you will need this skill on a daily basis to keep you accountable. And while you are mastering use of your glucometer, use this month to refresh and refine your practice of the remainder of the Five Essential Habits.

4: Finally, January is National Thyroid Awareness Month. The frequency of thyroid dysfunction in diabetic patients is higher than that of the general population. Multiple studies conclude that hypothyroidism shows a strong association with type 2 diabetes. Read more on Thyroid Disorders.

Gift for you: January calendar (print out on heavy paper or light card stock). You can 3-hole punch for a ring binder or punch one hole at the top to hang on the wall. Or use magnets to put the calendar on the side of a metal file cabinet. A new calendar page will be included with the first blog post of every month. If you would like the complete 12-month PDF calendar, join the Facebook group, Adventist Vegetarian Diabetics.
